First day of preschool

Okay, so I dropped off Ava at preschool today for the first time ever. Yes, she's starting in January because a spot just opened up for her (and she's been on the waiting list for a while). We've done a lot of preparation - meaning buying school clothes, planning lunches to pack, talking about the fact that she'll be there without Mommy and Daddy, etc. I can not believe how easily the day went. We drove up and she said "there's my school!", we walked in, put her extra clothes in her cubby, and said hello to the teacher. She was shy, but curious to look around at the other kids. I really tried to take her picture, but I could already see the "Mom put your camera away and don't embarrass me" look on her face. So I snapped a quick one, gave her a kiss and left the room. I looked through the window after I shut the door and she was already walking towards another little girl playing with a big dollhouse.
I had a lot of what if's going through my head while she was at school. What if she has to go to the bathroom and does not tell the teacher? What if she gets thirsty? What if she won't eat her lunch that we packed together? What if she's hot? What if she's cold? What if she says "something" she shouldn't say? What if the other kids are mean to her? What if she's mean to the other kids? What if she cries for me?
I went to pick her up about 30 minutes early (since it was her first day and I was sure she would be ready to see me). When I got to her classroom, she was sitting at the table eating her apples. Only her and a couple of other boys were left eating. All the other kids were finished and playing. My slow little eater. But after taking a closer look I saw that she ate her entire sandwich! Oh how happy that made me. She did not get up and run to me when I walked in the door. She smiled and continued eating. In fact, I had to coax her to clean up and get her jacket on so that she could come with me. She actually said she wanted to stay. Before we left we saw that the class was going out on the playground again, so then she really wanted to stay. I signed her out, picked her up, and said goodbye to the teacher. I then carried my crying little girl and strapped her into the car.
She did shed some tears, but not the kind I originally expected. :)

Oh what a big girl. 3 going on ? This is such a new beginning, I'm looking forward to lots of stories, and betting that she'll be more of a leader than a follower. Lovin' these photos and blogs! Gramma C.
